Categories : A Culture of Listening

5 months ago, our family sold our house and our belongings and set out on what some might call an adventure.  We set out to listen to God and obey Him, and we  sensed Him calling us to the Mediterranean region. We’ve moved 12 times since then.  We’ve set foot in five foreign countries, and all five of our kids have learned at least a few words in three languages.

We’ve got plenty of stories to tell, but people keep asking:

“How can you afford to do this?”

To tell the truth, I didn’t want to talk about it.   I didn’t want to be that missionary… the one who talks constantly about money. But to give God credit for what He’s doing, I have to talk about money.

We moved to Italy as marketplace missionaries.  My husband had a job as an English teacher, and we planned to minister “on the side”.  When we arrived, we discovered my husband’s employer didn’t have permission to hire an American.  Worse yet, there was no way we could legally work anywhere in Italy.

Instantly we recognized it as a set up.  We wouldn’t have moved overseas without a regular paycheck.

Four months later, there’s still no paycheck.  We’re in Israel now, and we can’t work here either.  But God has been paying the bills right on time.

Once, strangers literally walked up to me and handed me money.   Other times, people we taught or coached gave us money.  Different people lent us vehicles, bought us groceries, and gave us clothing and household items.  Others covered housing and travel costs.  The only thing all these people had in common was that we didn’t ask them for anything.

Every major expense we’ve had has been covered by gifts or some other unexpected source of provision, usually within a few days of when we needed it.

I didn’t post here last week.  We were days away from being homeless again, and I was a wreck.  We sensed that God wanted us to go to Jerusalem, but we had no place to stay. I wanted to ask you to pray for housing for us, but I realized there were only two options:

  • God can be trusted.  He provides for His own, and we don’t need to ask Him to do something He’s already promised to do.
  • God isn’t really good.  There’s no point to anything. ever.

After everything we’ve experienced, I was still afraid. So instead of praying for housing, we asked God to heal our hearts so we can believe the truth.

And after over a month of searching, we found a place in Jerusalem, hours before we got on the bus to come here.

Why am I telling you this?

we7woodYou know that thing…the thing you feel called to do…the thing you tell yourself you can’t do because your kids are too young, or you’re too old, or you don’t have the money?

Any God worth following will equip you to do the thing He’s asking you to do.  It might be at the last minute, or even slightly later than the last minute.  Will you listen and respond?

    Dear Hannah,
I’m so glad hearing from you! And you finally arrived at Jerusalemr!
Watching the TV news I accelerated my prayer for the peace of Jerusalem und your safety over there… I trust God He is in control anyhow.

Theorettrustingically we all know that God will provide all we need, but there must be some mystery in the necessity (inevitability?) of practical going through, I often sensed. Your prayer that God may heal Your hearts to believe this truth seems to be an answer, also for me. Thank you so much for sharing your rough practical experiences and your constancy!
I’ m now better prepared to face bottlenecks, (I don’t want to be naif anymore), for I prayed my heart to be healed and restored as well… and the bottleneck seems quite ahead… So I talk to myself respecting, comforting and teaching the parts inside of me who are still doing their own survival job, and not yet trusting and even knowing the Lords goodness and faithfulness. And we make progress! Likel you do!

You are such a model for me, I thank God for you. Your mission is already workng a gig!!!
I wished to come to your place in December, but not my but His will be done, God will guide me as well.

    Hoping my english is understandable,

Yours in the love of Yeshua Hamashiach,
    Heidi

    Hannah,
What a powerful testimony to God’s goodness! We are intimately familiar with this type of journey (minus all the moves), and can say that He has ALWAYS provided for our family as well, often miraculously. Love that you are in Jerusalem and although I realize you don’t know me personally, you can know I will be praying for your strategic placement there, both spiritually and professionally. Thanks for sharing so honestly. I believe it will help many to trust God more!
May He fill you with His Shalom-peace in every way!

I am greatly encouraged to know that you will be praying for me, Deborah. We don’t fully know why God brought us back here, but we know it’s no accident. Shalom to you!

Thank you for the update Hannah! You guys are on my mind a lot and of course the prayers are sent on your behalf. I have to admit in my flesh I don’t know how you do it. I know the answer of course. You laid it out for us. So many stories and details I am sure you have left out for time and space sake. Of course my not too distant past subjective reality has been “fatigue.” I automatically “go there” when I think of you guys too. How EXHAUSTED you must feel at times. Of course you are drawing upon the Lord’s strength and we all know you just believe and keep walking in FAITH. Time after time it sounds like the Lord brings you to the brink and then comes through. I am encouraged to find out how the Lord has brought you EVERYTHING you need in HIS perfect time. God working in you is TRULY and inspiration to many!! I have felt like I was “living on the edge” in a different kind of way for a number of years… can’t compare though to “your kind of living on the edge.” Who knows… I sure don’t. Not a clue, really. The WORD and the reality of HIS ongoing presence and guidance in our life along with that dialogue with Him is all we have to stand on! Love you and know I am in prayer for you. Please keep us informed of needs along the way.

You’re right. I definitely feel exhausted at times, and he keeps bringing us to the brink, past what we thought we could handle. Then he surprises us with new strength, unexpected comfort, even laughter. We’re still learning what it means to be sons and daughters of the King, but we are learning.

Thanks for letting me know. We’re all in this together, and I know that what God is doing in our family isn’t just about us, it’s about building up the whole body.
