Categories : A Culture of Listening Listening to Each Other Listening to God

I’m fascinated by 3 questionsThey keep me up at night, and compel me to get out of bed every morning.  They drive everything I do.  But before I ask them, and invite you to join me in discovering the answers, let me tell you how I got here.

I’ve been listening to and obeying God’s voice for 25 years.  During that time, God led my family and me on adventures from Israel to Italy, and from rural France to rural Minnesota.  Listening and obeying freed me from a life-threatening eating disorder I was told was “incurable”.   It saved me from severe clinical depression.  Now it serves as my unquenchable source of creativity for visual art, writing and songwriting.

Listening and obeying opened the door for me to start my first business as a translator and interpreter.   I learned how much fun it is to serve your ideal clients, over-deliver, and use your gifts to meet a need.  It taught me how hard I’m willing to work.  It also taught me that hard work is not enough.

I wasn’t making the impact I knew I was born to make. Finally, I discovered the missing ingredient.

It wasn’t enough to speak fluently, I needed to listen fluently.  Listening to God is key, but it’s only part of the equation. Listening to the people he placed in my life taught me  how I fit and how I contribute.

So I embarked on an intense period of growth and training.  Along with formal training to become a professional coach, I discovered lots of tools to help people connect through listening.  I became more and more passionate about getting these tools into the hands of as many changemakers as possible.

So whether you’re a parent building a family, an entrepreneur building a business, or both, I want to be your coach.   Each week I’ll share an activity, or an example of how the power of listening is changing the world.  You can use these activities in a variety of settings.   As you do, you’ll live your purpose and help other people live theirs.

In exchange for the 5 minutes of your week spent reading my blog, I’m committed to helping you listen fluently.  You’ll benefit more (and we’ll all learn more) if you answer the questions  at the end of each post in the comment section below.  All I ask is that you join this movement by joining my email list.  It’s free, and it helps me serve you better.  And if you find a post helpful, please share it. Together we can reach people I never could alone.

So here are my three questions:

  • What could one family accomplish if they committed to listening to God and to each other?
  • How could listening to God and each other inspire and empower kingdom driven entrepreneurs?
  • What if we treated families as incubators for innovation?

Are you curious about the answers to these questions? Sign up below to join families all over the world in discovering them together.

What’s one question that fascinates you? Write it in the comment section below so we can investigate it together.

Here we are again… nice to be back Hannah and the rest of you. The art of listening isn’t entirely new to me but many other aspects of living out my Christian faith are new for sure. I have SO MANY questions… my brain cant contain them all. I write some down and listen to God. Some times I get nothing. I realize it will take a while to breakdown the old paradigms and embrace the new. It’s fascinating and I am eager to keep learning and growing in my understanding of Being the Beloved and functioning within the “Real Church.’ Yeshuas definition of it. :-)

Hi Hannah! I absolutely love your website! Inspiring!

    My answers to the questions:

*What could one family accomplish if they committed to listening to God and each other? – Each family could be an embassy of Heaven: a family could be the structure/place where people of the world can run to for refuge, answers, our hopefully to start the process of “naturalization” for the Kingdom of God! A family could be the channel through which people learn who God is and how we should relate to Him.

*How could listening to God and each other inspire and empower kingdom driven entrepreneurs? – Listening to God and each other will help us to steer clear of the death traps that the enemy of souls has laid out for us; listening to God and each other will ensure that God’s will for each of us is perfected in us.

What if we saw families as incubators for innovation? – The saying is that “Two head are better than one” So having multiple points of view on any given situation is a powerful way of seeing things from God’s point of view, and thus being able to successfully address the various circumstances of life. A family as an innovation center will keep the ideals, hopes and dreams of each contributing member alive!

Thank you for this post: It has truly encouraged me to listen more an draw closer to my family.

    God bless you Hannah!

PS: My one burning question: What if the church wasn’t so insular and more conductive, i.e. what if the church spent less time sermonizing and scheduling, and more time disciple-ing and discovering God’s will for our individual lives? Click this link to get an essence of what I mean

Leanne, Thank you so much for taking the time to think about these questions with me. I’m not looking for answers from other people as much as I want to experience the answers in my own life. I think that’s what most of us want. (That’s why Jesus answered so many questions with another question). If someone poses a question on this blog, I’ll assume they want me to ask along with them unless they say they’re interested in hearing my take on it. Not because answers are bad, but because I want to point people to the Source of answers.
I’m glad this encouraged you, and I love your question!(the link posed some great questions too) More and more people are asking similar questions, which is exciting. If God is stirring so many to ask, he must want us to experience the answers. How will you take action to experience a “less insular, and more conductive” church?

  • Paola

Cool! I’m excited about learning how to listen fluently!

    • mlekallio

Paola, You understand the challenges of learning to speak a new language fluently, and that’s definitely an advantage. In some ways, learning to listen is similar: it takes the same kind of focus. What question is most important to you these days?

Hi Hannah, I love this.. And the question that fascinates me: What would be possible if fear no longer existed?

    • mlekallio

Teri, Your question is really worthwhile, and really challenging. I’m assuming you’re talking about the fears that are rooted in lies, rather than those that serve a protective function. What if we acknowledged our fears, but didn’t let them dictate our actions?

      • Debra

I love your response Hanna, “What if we acknowledged our fears, but didn’t let them dictate our actions?” It’s always about how we choose to respond to something.

        • mlekallio

It’s humbling to realize how powerful our choices are isn’t it? What question are you pondering lately, Debra?
